Immigrant Rights & American Values | Clinton, Cedar Falls, Iowa City, Dubuque, IA

Dr. Erik Camayd-Freixas, a federally certified interpreter who translated at federal hearings in Waterloo, Iowa, after the 2008 immigration raid at Agri-Processors, Inc., a meatpacking plant in Postville, Iowa, will speak to audiences throughout eastern Iowa in March. “Immigrant Rights and American Values,” the theme of his presentations, reflects his reaction to the hearings and the opinions he has expressed before Congress and in numerous essays published in the ensuing months.

The film covers the Postville, Iowa, immigration raid and the impact on Postville and workers’ home villages in Guatemala. The screening will include a panel discussion with filmmakers and Postville community leaders. The event starts at 7:00 pm in the Rogalski Center Ballroom, St. Ambrose University.

The Irish and Lithuanians immigrated to the Midwest on the transportation networks that they helped to construct. Most brought with them a devout Catholic faith, a deep longing for the homelands they left behind, and a stern determination to build more prosperous lives in the United States. This presentation will discuss the Irish and Lithuanian immigrant experiences and the folkways that they continued in America.
